Digital News Initiative in India
The Digital News Initiative (DNI) is a European organization designed by Google to support high-quality, collaborative journalism through digital innovation and technology. It encompasses the Innovation Fund worth Euros 150m, which this year issued grants to 4iolous projects at major news organizations across Europe. This initiative is an outgrowth of the company's own initiatives designed to improve the quality of its products and services and also the way it delivers them. For instance, recently it launched Google+ Social, an online social platform whose original aim was to enable social interaction between users of a particular product or service. Another initiative, called Google Buzz, is designed to get more people using an already existing platform, called Gmail, to share information about the products and services that they are interested in with their friends.
This new venture is part of the larger Digital News Initiative established by Google in 2010. The intent behind both is to enhance the company's overall digital news coverage, particularly its European coverage. At the same time, the drive is to make digital news more authoritative, both in its production and distribution. The initiative plans to expand its coverage further, not only to Europe but also to Latin America, Asia and Africa. It intends to build a network of experts, editors and contributors from different regions of the world.
In Europe, the DNI's ambitions are not so clear. However, some analysts see a possible merger of the Financial Times and the Independent, the Financial Times' regional editions, which are based in Britain and the Irish Times in Ireland, as well as the Financial Daily, which are the bureau of the French Financial Network. magazine would create a European media outlet with a wider geographical reach and a more global perspective than the Financial Times and the Independent combined.
There are also signs that the DNI is looking to expand its focus outside Europe, even Internationally. This month, it launched its first website in Pakistan. It will soon launch its second website in Bangladesh. In addition, the company has signed agreements with several Indian news agencies for the distribution of its stories across the Hindi speaking region of India, formerly known as the Hindi speaking zone. It also has strategic alliances with several South Asian countries for the purpose.
The Financial Times has also launched a sister site called Financial Daily, exclusively in Mandarin. The Financial Daily provides Financial news in a simplified and compact form. The Financial Times and Financial Daily have a similar tone of language, yet the Economic Daily has a more casual and informal style, while the Financial Daily has a much formal tone. The Economic Daily has a simpler layout than the Financial Times.
The Economic Daily has a more global outlook, yet it is also very specific in its coverage. Coverage includes Business News, Economy & Business, Environment, Education, Health, Home, Labor, International News, Headlines, International Health, International Sports, New Generation, Publishing, Religion, Referees, Russia, Statistics and Technology. There is also a sport section which carries sport related articles.
